Running with Reason

After only a few weeks of preparation, I decided to venture out and try a 4.5km race. The HBF Run for a Reason was a spectacular event with almost 14,000 participants. There were two separate lengths for the run/walk and participants could choose between 4.5km or 14km. And an amazing total of over $300,000 was raised to support various foundations!

At first I wasn't really entirely sure how I felt about running in the event, but I had the best reason to run - the memory of my grandma. :) I knew she would be proud that I took on something like that and that thought in itself gave me a drive to accomplish my goal of finishing the race. At the beginning I decided I wanted to complete the race in 30 minutes. It was a bit of a stretch since I'm not much of a runner, but I knew if I had no time in mind, I wouldn't get anywhere. Luckily before the race started  I was even fortunate enough to find another participant to run with. She and I chatted and had a great time pushing each other during the 4.5km run. We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw our time on her iPod. Our unofficial time was approximately 27min. I was blown away that I finished in under 30min. Now you can imagine my surprise when I got my official results on Tuesday and it was an even faster time of 25:41!!

Doing another event has just given me so much more drive to continue running and participating in these great runs. My next goal is set for August 28 where I will be running 12km in the City to Surf in Perth. I'm hoping to start fundraising for this event, so anyone who is willing and able to help, please contact me. :)

I think this is one the best weeks I've had in a really long time. Don't get me wrong, I'm having a fantastic time down under overall, but there was something about this week. I felt relaxed and really at home. (Please don't freak out by that comment, Mom. I promise I will come back to the U.S.!) I suppose it could be all of the music I've been working on or the fact that I accomplished a huge goal on Sunday. Regardless, whatever the reason, I am so happy right now. Life is wonderful and God has blessed me so much.

This week is also a bit nostalgic for me as I remember the past 4 years since I graduated from high school on May 26, 2007. So much has changed in my life since then, but I'm happy I've gone through every valley and climbed each mountain that has come my way. :) There is also another bit of happiness this week as I send a special shout-out to my parents. They are celebrating their 33rd wedding anniversary on May 27. Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! You are amazing and I would be no where without you! Love you!!!

That's all for now my little corner of the world! Miss you all!

Reality Check

Isn't amazing how one's life can change in an instant? A single word or action can have a huge influence or create a wave effect. A year ago I was just amazed at the fact that I had made the jump to take time off from school and move home with my parents for a while. I knew I needed a break and wanted to figure out where God was leading me. A few months down the line I had no idea that I would make another big leap and decide to move to Australia on somewhat of a whim. Not even a month into my Australian adventure I chose to take on a challenge I never really even previously even gave a thought to. I completed the triathlon and I am so proud that I can accomplish something I put my mind to.

Along this crazy road, I've met incredible people and have learned so much from all of them. As many of you know, one of those amazing human influences in my life was my Grandma. She was a beacon of light that could brighten any room. Her faith in God, even to the end, was something of incredible stature. Nothing I can say will fully express how important my Grandma was to me. I loved her greatly and miss her immensely. However, I can now rejoice with all others in the fact that she is having the greatest party of all in heaven! She's singing, dancing, maybe playing organ, and undoubtedly making some killer food. :) Living so far away has really shown a light on what and who I most value in my life. I would be no where without my family. They have supported me in everything I have done, especially in this crazy venture to Australia. I love them all dearly for it and cannot thank them enough for the support and love they have given me.

With all the sadness that has come with the loss of my Grandma, I can't help but remember how proud she was of me for taking the step to move halfway across the world. With that memory in hand, I have decided to run another race in a couple weeks in her honor. The race is a fundraiser for several different organizations including cancer research. My run is a tribute to her. If you wish to learn more about the race, you can visit the site for HBF Run for a Reason. I definitely have a reason for this run and her name is Gertie Bessert. <3

A couple weeks ago, I headed out on a week long camping adventure with my host family in Dongara, WA. What a blast it was to get away from the city and just relax on the beachfront! I read so much while in Dongara which is unheard of for me, but maybe this is a new chapter in my life (so to speak haha). Reading, relaxing, walking on the beach, and playing with the kids filled my time up north. I couldn't have asked for a better "family" vacation. I did have to sleep in a tent on a very tiny air mattress, but that just made it that much more of an adventure. :) One of my favorite things from up north was driving on the beach. I have never done anything like that before and it was awesome even with being tumbled around in the back seat. :) Check out a few of my favorite pictures from the trip.

One afternoon I decided to go on a little adventure by myself. I got some great shots of the beach and the estuary. Such a beautiful place!

The kiddos certainly love being a little crazy for pictures!

After a long week away, I spent the last sunset just chilling on the jetty with a friend. A very relaxing week was definitely needed. :)

All in all the past few weeks have been filled with ups and downs, but I am still having a great time down under. These past weeks have taught me that I have no control over anything regardless of how much planning I do or how much I think I can control circumstances. I am blessed to be where I am, surrounded with wonderful people, and feeling the love flowing from all parts of the world. I don't think I've ever been more thankful for the life that God has granted me with all the awesome opportunities he has given me.
